There is a fine line between cliche and characters that people can relate to. Yes, interns are awkard, idealistic, and yappy. I've been all of that. Veteran docs can be cynical. That's not me all the time but sometimes, OK at 3am with the umpteenth drunk patient of the night, definitely. But I hope my characters are more universal than cliched.
The goal is character rather than cliche.
But when the guy with the mullet and the "born to lose" tattoo rolls in hand-cuffed for medical clearance after he got tased....man, the stuff writes itself.
